This paper aims to establish a compilation of the solutions or initiatives that can be implemented by local administrations in order to improve freight deliveries in urban environments. These improvements are not defined from the point of view of logistic companies, but from the point of view of urban communities and the relation between freight transport and general urban traffic. All the solutions considered here are generic, that is, suitable a priori for any given urban area, although their degree of appropriateness and expected results will depend on the specific characteristics of the city. Solutions are classified into those related to public infrastructure, land use management, access conditions, traffic management, enforcement and promotion.

STRAIGHTSOL is a new 3-year EU-funded project, comprising seven innovative cutting edge urban freight demonstrations. This video introduces the STRAIGHTSOL project and the demonstrations.

Logistics industry is considered as the artery and basic industry of national economic development, its development level has become an important index to measure modernization and comprehensive national strength of a country. Meanwhile, modern logistics zone tends to more maximization, intelligent and ecological. Based on E-commerce platform, logistics park planning should actively develop e-commerce, build e-commerce platform, integrate leisure tourism experience service into traditional logistics park to enhance its popularity, build brand and drive the aggregation of people.

Urban freight transport is becoming more and more important in Switzerland and also other countries. On the one hand we face negative impacts on the environment and society and on the other hand urban freight distribution is getting more and more costly and less reliable due to traffic jams. Within a Swiss project the goods supply and transport in conurbations has been investigated, key factors and sustainability indicators derived, an evaluation frame for measures developed, measures and strategies for more sustainable goods supply and transport carried out and assessed and an implementation plan developed. Within a follow up project guidelines for freight planning in urban areas have been carried out. During the City Logistics Conference in Crete in 2007 the first results of the national research project Sustainable Goods Supply and Transport in Conurbations (Agglomerations) (2006-2009) have been presented. Especially the results on Freight indicators and development in conurbations, key factors for urban freight development and relevance of freight transport, locations requirements for logistics and freight transport facilities and acceptance of urban freight measures. This paper provides further results on the institutional integration of freight transport in public planning, on urban freight measures and strategies and on the implementation of measures and success factors.

This paper examines the changes taking place in the way transportation policy and investment decisions are made. To provide an understanding of these changes, they are placed in the larger context of major trends in public-sector decision making: devolution, fragmentation, and privatization. The changes taking place in the transport sector are viewed as consistent with larger trends. The changes pose particular challenges in transportation because of its unique characteristics, and they have contributed to four problems: (a) preserving and enhancing system network benefits, (b) avoiding inefficient decisions, (c) solving transportation's externalities, and (d) ensuring accountability. The Alameda Corridor is used as an example of managing the new decision-making landscape. The paper closes with thoughts on improving the transportation decision-making process.
